How To's

These are links* to sites that I find very helpful and informative. Some are for advanced users only and contain information that is only useful for the geeks of the world. Others are sites that evey PC user should know about and use routinely. Some are just good at what they do.

For General Use

For Advanced Users

Ask.com - an excellent search engine

Windows Update Site - Microsoft provides a link to this site as part of Windows. It is a good idea to keep your Windows OS up to date to be sure your PC is secured against threats from the internet.

Spybot Search & Destroy download site - my choice for an anti-spyware program. It's free to individuals

AdAware download site - my favorite adware scanner. Also free for private use.

Avast.com - they offer an excellent and free anti-virus program. Should only be used behind a firewall since it does not provide that protection. If you have a router, you have a firewall.

AVG.com - another good anti-virus freebie.

Acrobat Reader download site - this is the reader plug-in for the popular PDF file format

Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce - learn more about the area around Hartford where I live and work

Town of Hartford - site that I maintain for the town government

Answers That Work - a good site for technical information especially startup tasks in Windows. Click on the Task List button when you get there.

Castle Cops - another technical site devoted primarily to indentifying programs you see running on PC's

The Start-up List from the Mentors page at lafn.org. This a very extensive list of start-up programs you find running on PC's. Helpful in determining what is part of Windows or other legitimate software and what might be a virus, adware or spyware. Highly recommended if you can deal with the technical stuff.

Advanced Search at Microsoft Support

Symantec Search - Symantec Support for Norton Anti-Virus and Internet Security products

McAfee Help and Support - the support site for McAfee products

NewEgg.com - a good source for parts

4AllMemory.com - a good source for memory modules
